Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship

New dedicated site, stabling and facilities

Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship offers a range of different sessions to meet the diverse needs of individuals. The approach is integrative, underpinned by person-centred, attachment theory, trauma informed and strength-based approaches which support the participant to find their own solutions within a supportive, non-judgemental, safe space.

Horse welfare is paramount, and Sirona follows a horse-centred, positive reinforcement approach alongside a natural management system. The special herd of horses are especially suited and trained to work in equine-assisted activities, are safe, and enjoy contact with people. The herd is made of a diverse group of horses, many of the whom are rescue animals, and Sirona provides them with a home for life.

Funds were donated to support the building of fabulous facilities at a beautiful new centre based at Dartington Hall, Devon. This has included an open barn, stable block and outdoor arena for exercising the horses, toilet facilities and hay storage.  All the horses and ponies settled quickly, were happy and relaxed into their new home, with more room to move around in the purpose built open barn and stables, together with safe post-and-rail fencing.

The team at Sirona includes professional practitioners with qualifications in horsemanship, counselling and psychotherapy, child psychology, occupational therapy, social work and teaching. A variety of equine-based activities are offered and delivered on site, and the new facilities have enabled the charity to reach an increased number of beneficiaries on the waiting list. Activities include: equine-assisted therapy in one-to-one sessions, horse care in groups or one-to-one, equine-based mindfulness, adult volunteering, work placements, and public courses, holiday and family sessions.
